East Kent Gleaning Group is a part of the UK Gleaning Network, a network of community-led groups that brings together volunteers all over the country to help rescue fresh, surplus fruit and veg from farms where it would otherwise be wasted, and get it those who need it the most. In doing so we are bringing "Gleaning"- an age-old practice to avoid waste, into the 21st century.
Our regional hub network aims to deliver Gleaning Days in East Kent - Covering the districts of Ashford, Canterbury, Dover, Folkestone & Hythe and Thanet. We work in partnership with the amazing Gleaning Hub Coordinators at Hythe Environmental Community Group and DealWithIT - Transition Deal.
Research conducted by campaign group FEEDBACK, has found that farmers waste around 16% of their crop before it even leaves the field or barn – often due to factors beyond their control, such as produce not being the right shape or size for supermarket tastes, or inaccurate forecasting by retailers of how much produce they will buy, leaving farmers with excess crop on their hands.
East Kent Gleaning Group exists to
connect community volunteers, farmers and food redistribution charities, in order to rescue the tonnes of fresh fruit and vegetables that are wasted on farms every year, and divert this fresh, nutritious food from waste to local communities.
"Reducing food waste is the third most effective solution to fighting climate change."
Our overall mission is to reduce avoidable food waste and to combat food poverty, by preventing surplus food from going to waste through a community-led infrastructure to divert and transform this food into delicious and nutritious meals!
We aim to provide community volunteers with a hands-on opportunity to engage with and support FEEDBACK's global vision for a sustainable food system.
